Officer Marcus Williams of the Cache County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Jonathan Stewart is in custody. Stewart is being detained for obstructing law enforcement during the Witch Rock fire early Friday morning.

“Of course he’s in our custody,” Williams said. “He was forbidding us from doing our job.”

Stewart was on the scene of the Witch Rock fire without authorization, allegedly filming and taking pictures.

“We haven’t had time with everything else that happened today to let him know why he’s detained,” Williams said.

Stewart’s detainment caused the Environmental Research Protection Association to rally on Utah State University’s quad, claiming that his detainment is a “government conspiracy” and that a lawsuit has been filed.

Williams said the sheriff’s office is unaware of any lawsuit.
