Utah State University gymnastics coach Bella Károlyi visited Mexico City on Thursday for discussions with the Mexican National Sports Federation.

Károlyi, head coach at USU for the past five seasons, declined to comment on the negotiations, but USU athletic director Marsha Kaint confirmed that she had encouraged Károlyi to accept the federation’s overtures.

“Bella has been a great coach, no doubt,” Kaint said. “But it’s not in our nature to try to prevent our coaches or athletes from pursuing amazing opportunities. We would be so very sorry to lose him, but we would also be very proud to have been part of his amazing career.”

Károlyi, not to be confused with a fellow Romanian coach with a similar name who has trained a host of world medalists, came to Utah State in 2007 following a successful stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame.
